Russian human rights activist Lev Ponomaryov sent to prison

A Moscow court on Wednesday sentenced prominent Russian human rights activist Lev Ponomaryov, 68, to three days in prison for refusing to obey police orders and attempting to stage an unsanctioned march.

Ponomaryov and opposition politician Boris Nemtsov were detained in Moscow on Sunday for taking part in unofficial demonstrations, Interfax news agency reported. They were part of a group on its way to a concert organized to protest the felling of a Moscow forest area under threat from developers.
